LONDON— The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is warning pharmacists about a new form of prescription drug, a “preferred” form of the prescription drug Prilosec.
The new drug, a “preferred” form of Prilosec, has been linked to a heightened risk of heart attack and stroke.
The safety and effectiveness of Prilosec has been reviewed and approved by the FDA’s Medical Devices and Health Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA).
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has also issued a safety alert on the use of Prilosec in patients with heart failure.
The warning has been issued by the FDA on the following drugs: Prilosec (esomeprazole), Prilosec XR (omeprazole), Prilosec LA (omeprazole) and Prilosec Nexium (lansoprazole).
The warning was added by the FDA and follows a review of the data submitted by the FDA to the HMO to assess the safety of Prilosec.
The review concluded that patients with established cardiovascular disease (CVD) are at an increased risk of stroke or heart attack, and heart failure.
The warning also recommended that the warning should be added to the label of Prilosec, as a potential risk factor.
Lifestyle modification is recommended to reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke.

The FDA has updated the warning and is awaiting the results of the latest HMO clinical trial that will evaluate the use of Prilosec.
“Prilosec has not been associated with an increased risk of heart attack, heart failure or stroke, but a greater risk appears associated with a greater severity of the condition. The increased risk appears to be greatest with a dose of 20 mg or more,” the FDA said.
The FDA also advised pharmacists to monitor patients for an increased risk of heart failure and stroke when using Prilosec.

Dr. Marc Gordonjian / Getty Images“There is a risk that a patient who is not taking Prilosec may experience serious complications, such as cardiac death or cardiac arrest,” the FDA said.
“While there are some studies which have shown a small increased risk of cardiac arrest, there is not enough evidence to support an increased risk of cardiac death, cardiac arrest and the possibility of cardiac arrest occurring in patients taking Prilosec.”
“It is important for prescribers to be aware of these potential complications and to be aware of the potential dangers of using Prilosec.”
John Smith, president of the American College of Cardiology, said: “Prilosec is a very safe and effective medication for the treatment of cardiovascular disease and is being used with great caution and is not approved for the treatment of chronic disease.”
According to a review of available research, the risk of heart attack or stroke is 1 in 10 patients with heart failure treated with Prilosec. There are currently no available clinical trials that directly compare the drug with other heart-failing medications.
“This information is important because it may be helpful in patients who may benefit from Prilosec, as well as those who are at risk of a cardiovascular event,” the review stated.
Michael G. Johnson, the director of the Office of Dietary Supplements for the FDA, said: “This new form of Prilosec is an important step in the FDA’s efforts to provide information about the safety and effectiveness of this medication, especially in patients who may be at increased risk of cardiovascular events.”
Steven J. Kagan, a cardiologist at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, said: “These new data are critical to evaluating the potential benefits and risks of Prilosec in patients with heart failure.”
The new drug will be available over the counter in the U. S. within five years, and a prescription is required for the medication. The new drug is the only approved medication for the treatment of patients with heart failure.
